Code Name: Revanche
Real Name: Kwannon
Height: 5'11"
Weight: 155 lbs.
Group Affiliation: None
Prior Affiliations: X-Men, the Hand
First Appearance: X-Men #20
Known Relatives: None
Known Allies: Matsu'o Tsurayaba
Known Enemies: Elizabeth Braddock, Spiral, Mojo
Powers: Revanche has the mutant power of telepathy. This ability
allows her to transmit her thoughts to others and read the minds of
others. While she resides in Elizabeth's original body, it has never
been shown that Revanche can tap into Betsy's mindblast power. Instead,
she is able to create a psychic kitana that works on the same principles
of Psylocke's psychic knife.
Origin: Kwannon was a Japanese assassin that was romantically involved
with a fellow assassin, Matsu'o Tsurayaba. After an encounter on a
pier in Hong Kong between the British mutant telepath Betsy Braddock
and Kwannon, she was found by Matsu'o Tsurayaba. The encounter between
the two women had extreme results. Revanche remembers the ninja Kwannon
coming upon the body of Betsy Braddock on a pier. Kwannon reaches
out and touches Betsy's body. At one touch, Betsy's fractured mind
reaches to Kwannon's, the two minds of Kwannon and Betsy Braddock
fuse together. However, Psylocke's mind depicts the exchange occurring
under the direction of Mojo and Spiral in Mojoworld's Body Shop.
Matsu'o exploited the fused but fragmented mind of Betsy in the body
of Kwannon. Using a sensory depravation tank to create a new reality
for Psylocke, Matsu'o changes Psylocke to become a master assassin
for the Mandarin. After Elizabeth's transformation, it was believed
that her original body was no more. However, months later, a female
assassin planned to regain her position by killing the X-Man, Psylocke.
This assassin was the woman, Kwannon, who was residing in the original
body of Elizabeth Braddock. Cerebro and the Xavier Mansion's security
systems did not prevent her from entering the mansion, given that
Elizabeth's gene scan was okayed by the security system. Psylocke
faced her doppleganger in the Danger Room, assuming it was a holographic
simulation created by fellow X-Man, Phoenix. Instead, the doppleganger
fought back and revealed herself to be Elizabeth Braddock.
Based on appearances, the new arrival seemed like the original Psylocke.
However, surface scans of Revanche and Psylocke's minds were identical
and Wolverine noted that Revanche knew ninja moves that were never
taught to her by Wolverine (the only X-Man knowledgable in that field
during the Australian days). As time passed, it was becoming clearer
and clearer that neither of the women were completely what they said
they were. Psylocke's memories were distorted to the point where she
imagined herself as an Asian child who cut her British twin in half.
After ambushing Matsu'o and the Mandarian, they realized that there
were other parties involved in the mystery behind the two women.
In a battle with the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, Revanche revealed
that she had contracted the deadly Legacy Virus. Her condition continued
to get weaker and weaker, until she decided it was time to die in
peace. She tore out her bionic eyes (still in Elizabeth's original
body) and left them in a note for Psylocke to find. Travelling to
Japan, Revanche attempted to learn the final truth behind the mystery.
While she did know that she was not truly Elizabeth Braddock (the
ruse was to pay back Psylocke for what happened to her), she did not
know how she was changed so inreversably. Matsu'o revealed that the
enchantress Spiral and the Hand used magick and science to repair
the two minds and bodies. To prevent the Legacy Virus from consuming
her, Revanche had Matsu'o stab her. Before death claimed her, Revanche
left an incredible amount of psychic residue with Matsu'o to allow
him to remove all of Revanche's memories from Psylocke, while restoring
all of Betsy's lost memories.
